Matcha tea, anyone?


Just like most French people, I’m not a big fan of tea… I’m actually totally out of my comfort zone here… I however changed my mind since I discovered this Japanese vibrant green powder called matcha tea. Its fantastic taste, its incredible health benefits and the beautiful and ancestral ritual around it perfectly embody my motto Real Food + Health = Pleasure ©.

If you haven’t tried matcha tea yet, here are a few things that could turn you into a matcha addict… just like me!

What is matcha tea?

Matcha is the purest and oldest green tea, harvested in Japan only.

Matcha tea is pure tea leaf only. While growing, the tea fields are deprived from the sunlight to optimise the tea taste and colour, which also increases its levels of chlorophyl and amino-acids.

It’s picked manually, steamed, dried and ground into this very delicate and super green powder that we call matcha tea.

Just like any green tea, matcha contains chlorophyl, amino-acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The big difference is that while you get 10 to 20% of these nutrients with the ordinary green tea, the way matcha tea is harvested and made gives 100% of these nutrients. Yes, you read it well. 100%.

Matcha tea is simply one of the most potent foods.

As you know, antioxidants help fight free radical, at the root of many inflammatory diseases, boost metabolism, lower cholesterol and slow the ageing process. The matcha tea is one of the -if not the best- antioxidant powerhouses as its antioxidant level  is much higher than other antioxidant-rich foods: 30 times more than spinach or broccoli, more than 10 times than blueberries, 4 times than gojiberries…

One antioxidant, highly concentrated in matcha tea (100 times more than in ordinary green tea),  is also known to boost metabolism significantly. If you also consider its concentrated amount of chlorophyl (super powerful detoxifier) and fiber (which promotes digestion), matcha tea is one of your best weight loss allies.

The very high number of amino acids in matcha tea will also help you wind down as it reduces anxiety and boost mood. The combination with caffeine also enables to sustain a good level of energy so you can keep focused.

The good news is that the type of molecules -without getting too technical- stop the negative side effects of caffeine. It doesn’t even promote the production of cortisol, one of our health worst enemies!

No wonder why match tea is meditation gurus’ drink of choice.

How to prepare your matcha tea?

It’s an important part of the Japanese culture and is central to its tea culture ceremony.

To really enjoy it, you will need a bamboo whisk and a bowl (glass ideally to see the vibrant green colour). Simply follow the instruction in the video made by Panatea… How simple, how beautiful!

It’s almost art…

The purest (and most expensive) matcha tea made with younger leaves is used for the traditional tea ceremony as a drink, hot, cold, with or without milk.

There is as well a cheaper version made with more mature leaves, perfect for cooking (think matcha tea pancake!) or added to your smoothies, porridge, yoghurt…
